Released (For middle grade readers): October 2024
Spirit of the Warriors is a fiction story that taps into authentic themes that are so relevant for middle-grade readers (and all the rest of us for that matter!). The story is layered with compassion, empathy, resilience, multiculturalism, and a compelling mix of independence and teamwork that all ultimately combine to capture the strength of human spirit.
I wanted to tell a story which encourages readers to jump into the pages and see themselves among the characters, settings, and situations. The book is rich with senses, and it’s no surprise I’ve dug into my own experiences—some of them, very personal— to make this happen.
I grew up in Gunnedah in country New South Wales which fostered my love of cricket. Eventually, I covered several Australian cricket tours, including to India—and it’s not an overstatement to say my initial Indian experiences at the 1996 Cricket World Cup changed my life.
When working in schools I often use sport as a connection-point to encourage young people to explore and develop their literacy skills and find their voices.
