This picture was taken in Manaus, Brazil, in 2007. It is a city near the meeting of the Rio Negro (Black River) and the Rio Solimoes in the Amazon Rainforest. Actually, the literal ‘meeting of the rivers’ is fascinating. Because of the rivers’ different speeds, temperatures and sediments, they don’t mix easily, and the division between the two waterways is obvious.
In this part of the world, waterways are highways that cut and meander through the rainforest to towns and villages that can be several days’ boat travel away. Porters, such as the man in the photo, lug all sorts of bits and pieces to and from the boats. Manaus would not survive without them.
Among many other things, such as music and art, Brazil is famous for its football (soccer). To play the game is to celebrate a way of life. One of the most famous players in history is Brazilian. Look up Pelé. A super star for the ages.
Perhaps you could write a story about a young child who dreamed of playing in a World Cup? Or maybe you’d like to launch yourself into the below picture (there’s a lot going on in it), and build a story amid the sweat and steam of the Amazon. Remember the importance of asking questions: Who? What? Where? Why? When? and How?
